Empathy in the Workplace
As a member of the University of Chicago’s Professional Development Certificates Student Advisory Board, I have the opportunity to create and moderate events on topics related to the certificate programs. This month I’ll be moderating an event on a topic that is so fascinating to me, especially as a coach: empathy. This topic is covered in the Conscious Leadership and Team Management certificate program (which I completed earlier this year). Since empathy is not often discussed in the context of the workplace, I wanted to create an online event that could provide information on this topic and share insights from industry professionals. The following sections provide the event description and registration information. Prospective students, current students, and alumni are all welcome to register for this free event!
Event Description: Cultivating Empathy in the Workplace
Empathy is an important skill, as it helps us understand and imagine what others are feeling and experiencing. Empathy is beneficial for both our personal and professional lives. In a professional context, empathy can lead to improved performance and higher morale. These benefits, along with others, will be discussed this August during a moderated discussion with industry professionals (Dr. Christine Lawther and Dr. Samantha Coleman) who will share their insights on cultivating empathy at work. This online event on empathy can be helpful for all professionals, including those who work on-site and those who work remotely and as freelancers.
Attendees will learn about the following:
Sympathy, empathy, and compassion—and their differences
The benefits of empathy for both individuals and organizations
Accountability and how it relates to empathy at work
How professionals can develop emotional intelligence (EI) to improve empathy
How leaders and managers can develop EI in others
